This project was inspired by a youth group floor hockey event that we did last summer. I thought creating a trophy would be a fun way to provide the group an incentive to participate and build a sense of team spirit and camaraderie while vying for the coveted Hope Cup. I went to the Salvation Army Thrift Store and found a large stock pot, a smaller pot and a dirty silver chalice. One of the kids from the group welded helped me weld the three pieces together to make the cup.

This snapshot was heavily photoshopped, the welds did not turn out as pretty as I had hoped. Turns out it’s really hard to weld 3 different types of metal to each other using a MIG welder (not sure if we used a MIG welder, but it’s the only kind of welder I know about so…you get the idea). We actually ended up using a lot of Bond-O to secure the silver cup to the top (I’m 80% sure if it’s not solid silver, it’s at least silver plated).

This is the first iteration of the logo. I think I started drawing the cup at about 6 or 7 at night and got this version at about 9:30. I decided on the Ranger typeface as the small flourish/serifs lent themselves to the speed at which broomball on ice is played. Fast, but not that fast.

Playing around, I drew some pucks and balls and added a ribbon with the event name on it. Wasn’t thrilled with the fact that the balls were the only objects with gradient 3D.

As you can see I eliminated a few elements and re-drew the balls to make them fit in better with the rest of the logo. I also changed the way I was outputting the design to match the screen resolution of the iPhone.

More “refining” aka adding a sweet texture.

A preliminary poster.
I have to admit I broke a lot of my own rules. Novelty font, distorted type, textures on textures…are the ones that immediately come to mind, but somehow I think this logo is appropriate. A youth leader who is trying to take what should be a fun, lighthearted event and turning it into a bloodthirsty competition that pits sibling against sibling for the hopes of drinking high-fructose corn syrup based drinks out of the cup.
